A gravel driveway is one of the most cost-effective ways to get solid, all-weather access to a home, shop, barn, or back field. What it costs comes down to size, the dirt work underneath, and how much drainage the site needs. Here is what gravel driveways typically run across North Georgia and the surrounding area, and what makes the number move.
Gravel driveway cost per square foot
- $2 to $5+ per square foot for a basic installation on a site that is already prepared and drains well.
- $4 to $10+ per square foot when the project includes excavation, grading, geotextile fabric, drainage improvements, and a proper stone base.
Cost by driveway size
Rough project ranges most owners see:
- 12 by 50 feet (about 600 sq ft): $1,500 to $4,000+
- 12 by 100 feet (about 1,200 sq ft): $2,500 to $8,000+
- 12 by 200 feet (about 2,400 sq ft): $5,000 to $15,000+
- Long rural driveway (500 feet or more): $8,000 to $30,000+

What drives the price
- Length and width. More driveway means more base stone, more surface gravel, and more time.
- Site prep. A flat, cleared, well-draining site costs less than one that needs excavation, tree and brush removal, or heavy grading first.
- Drainage. Culverts, ditches, and swales add cost, and in red clay they are the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that ruts out.
- Access and hauling. In North Georgia, hauling stone to a remote or hard-to-reach site can push the price up.
How a gravel driveway should be built in red clay
Cheap driveways wash out because they skip the base. On our clay, a driveway that holds up usually needs:
- 4 to 6 inches of crusher run for a compacted base.
- 2 to 3 inches of #57 crushed stone or similar for the surface.
- Proper grading and drainage so water sheds off instead of pooling and cutting ruts.
Filter fabric between the clay and the base is often worth it too, because it keeps the stone from disappearing into the clay over time.

- Excavation and grading: $1 to $4+ per square foot.
