Catoosa County lies flat by the standards of this corner of Georgia. Draw a line west to east across it at the latitude of Ringgold and the elevation never leaves the band between 688 and 1,128 feet, a spread of 440 feet for the entire width of the county. Close to 98 percent of it is Valley and Ridge, limestone and shale under a thin skin of relief, and its two towns sit near enough to the state line that Chattanooga is the commute. The problem here is seldom how to climb something. It is what to do with water on a place hemmed in by neighbors.

146 Square Miles Outside Ringgold and Fort Oglethorpe

Two municipalities hold ground in the county. Fort Oglethorpe accounts for about 11.0 square miles of Catoosa and Ringgold for about 4.9, which together comes to roughly 9.8 percent, a larger built share than Walker or Dade carries. That still leaves something near 146 of 162 square miles beyond either one. What is out there is not wilderness. It is Boynton, Graysville, Lakeview, Indian Springs, and Catoosa Springs, plus a long inventory of two and five acre home sites strung along the roads that join them.

A parcel that size occupies an awkward middle. It is big enough that the water has to be handled on site and small enough that there is no spare corner to send it to. Well and septic still govern where fill can land. Access is a driveway with a mailbox on one flank and a fence on the other, which decides the size of machine that comes and where it can turn once it is in. Answers that work on forty acres do not scale down to three.

Shrink Swell Clay Is the Local Difficulty

Lyerly ranks second in the county at roughly 13,300 acres and it earns the attention. It is a very fine clay off argillaceous limestone, mapped on hills and uplands, sitting in the highest runoff and lowest infiltration class the survey assigns. It swells with moisture and pulls back as it dries. Townley adds about 8,500 acres of the same class on shale ground, with weathered rock near twenty seven inches. The pair together accounts for about 21 percent of Catoosa.

Not everything here behaves that way. Minvale leads the county at about 14,600 acres, a cherty loam that takes water readily. Shack covers 7,600 and conceals a fragipan, a brittle band water gets through only slowly. Then there is the bottom ground, which for a county this small covers real acreage. Chenneby occupies more than 6,500 acres on flood plain steps with almost no fall to them, two percent at most, and the survey rates it somewhat poorly drained. Rome, Tupelo, and Cedarbluff hold the terraces above it. A back half that stays soft into May usually has one of those names beneath it.

One Subbasin, No Divide Anywhere

Catoosa is unusual for being undivided. All of it, every point sampled, falls inside HUC8 06020001, Middle Tennessee-Chickamauga. No ridge inside the county line sends water two directions. Whatever lands here joins the Chickamauga creeks and reaches the Tennessee River at Chattanooga.

The stream inventory reports the same thing. Of 28 named streams with flowline inside the boundary, South Chickamauga Creek carries 29.5 kilometers, West Chickamauga 28.9, Peavine 27.8, Little Chickamauga 27.0, East Chickamauga 16.3, and Tiger Creek 12.9. Long channels on a floor with 440 feet of total relief add up to slack gradients, and slack is not the same as safe. Water that never picks up speed never hurries off either, and on Lyerly it is not going down.

Rainfall confirms it. The Ringgold gauge normals 49.53 inches a year: December 4.94, March 4.90, February 4.81, January 4.78, against 3.17 in October. Chattanooga Airport a few miles north reads 55.00 inches at 61.9 degrees. Either record puts the heavy months in the cold half of the calendar, which is exactly when clay is least cooperative.

How the Work Shakes Out on a Catoosa Lot

Most projects here are water projects under another name. A lawn that will not dry, a shed slab pitched back toward the house, a swale running the wrong way, a corner that never firms up. Drainage and water control handles all of that, and on these clays the leverage sits upslope: stop the inflow before it arrives rather than chase it once it is standing.

Driveways are the other steady item. Stone set directly on shrink swell clay rides whatever the clay does, season after season, so what goes underneath matters as much as what shows. A crown that throws water to both edges, and a shoulder that carries it somewhere real, separates a drive that holds from one that gets restoned every spring. Drives and access covers new construction, widening, and turnarounds for places where a truck currently reverses a hundred yards to leave.

For a slab or a pad, grading and site prep establishes fall on all sides of the structure and heads off whatever the ground above is sending down. Where the complaint is a lumpy lawn that ponds and is miserable to cut, yard leveling applies the same principle at a smaller scale and a smaller cost. And where a couple of acres has filled in with privet and volunteer pine along the rear line, clearing puts the ground back in use.

Usually, once the cause is clear. On the clay soils that cover much of Catoosa the water is not going down whatever you do, because those soils hold the lowest infiltration rating the survey assigns. Both cases end the same way: give the water a route out, and cut off what is feeding the wet area from higher ground. Filling the low place is the one method that reliably fails, since the water just relocates to the next low place.

Crown and shoulder fix the first. The second is worth answering before another load of stone gets ordered.

October, by the numbers. The Ringgold record puts it at 3.17 inches, well under every other month, and clay works best when it is not carrying water. The four heaviest months are December, March, February, and January, all of them near five inches, and clay that is saturated will not densify under a roller. It displaces instead, and whatever gets built above it inherits that movement. Brush and clearing work tolerates a damp calendar much better than pad work does, so a tight schedule usually runs the clearing early and holds the dirt work until the ground firms.

Less than the mountains on either side of here, though not none. The shale soils covering a fair slice of the county meet weathered rock near twenty seven inches. Out on the sandstone ridge ends the shallowest series in Catoosa stops at eighteen. The cherty soils are not solid rock at all and still fill a bucket with hard fragments. And several of the limestone soils break the surface as ledges. Which of those sits under a given lot is worth establishing before a price gets attached to a cut, because it changes the approach rather than ending the job.
